According to foreign media reports, Walmart recently announced the opening of its seventh import distribution center in the world in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The new distribution center covers an area of 3 million square feet, equivalent to the size of 52 football fields, and Walmart spent $220 million. Walmart said it chose Ridgeville to open its import distribution center because the area is well-developed and close to Charleston Deepwater Port, the eighth largest port in the United States. The center will be responsible for storing and sorting goods imported through the Charleston Port and then delivering them to 850 Walmart and Sam's Club stores in the southeastern United States. In addition, once the center is fully operational, it will increase the cargo volume of Charleston Deepwater Port by about 5%. Jeff Holzbauer, general manager of Walmart's U.S. import logistics department, said: "South Carolina is the most developed logistics industrial region in the United States, with the Port of Charleston and Highways 26 and 95. The opening of Walmart's sorting center in the state will make Walmart's supply chain more complete and bring more jobs to local residents." Walmart will work with the American Chamber of Commerce to hire more than 1,300 local full-time employees at the new sorting center. As of now, Walmart operates 122 stores in South Carolina. Through the new sorting center, Walmart will expand its industrial chain to the seaport, which will speed up the processing of various commodities from all over the world. “Walmart has been a leader in supply chain strategy for the industry and we are delighted to welcome Walmart to the Port of Charleston,” said Jim Newsom, CEO of the Port of Charleston. “Walmart’s arrival will further solidify the Port of South Carolina as a leader in retail distribution. Additionally, Walmart and our strategic investments in port infrastructure will strengthen the global supply chain and have a positive impact on it.” Editor ✎ Nicole/ Disclaimer: This article is copyrighted and may not be reproduced without permission. |
