Trump was shot! Will peripheral products become a hit?

Yesterday, the news of #Trump was shot# swept all major media platforms.

According to CCTV News, Trump was shot while delivering a campaign speech in Pennsylvania on the afternoon of July 13th local time in the United States.

A single stone stirs up a thousand waves. On July 14, related topics such as #Trump says his right ear was shot through#, #identity of the gunman who shot Trump confirmed#, and #Trump life photos# quickly became hot searches.

It is worth mentioning that while netizens are eagerly following the follow-up developments of this major event, some keen e-commerce sellers have already smelled the business opportunities therein.

It is learned that shortly after Trump was shot, netizens discovered that stores on multiple domestic e-commerce platforms had already put on sale and were selling peripherals related to Trump's attack.

According to reports, these stores usually use the live picture of Trump raising his fist when he was shot (which netizens jokingly call "Trump's life photo") as a handle to make T-shirts and sell them on e-commerce platforms. Some of these products have even generated sales revenue.

At the same time, some sellers revealed that many anchors on TikTok have started live broadcasts to sell these peripheral products . One of the anchors’ T-shirts not only sold over 100 pieces in a short period of time , but also sold thousands of pieces after the price increased by $10.

Therefore, once the news was exposed, it caused heated discussions in the cross-border circle:
"We are still watching the fun, but the Americans have already started live streaming to sell peripherals."
"It's too fast. I doubt these products are made in Yiwu again."
"Amazon Prime Day hot item pre-order: Trump assassination related T-shirts!"

In addition to being curious about the audience for these peripheral products, more sellers expressed another question about Trump's peripheral products: Wouldn't it be an infringement of rights to use Trump's image to make peripheral products without permission?

The answer is yes: there is a risk of infringement.

First, according to Article 46 of the U.S. Anti-Unfair Competition Act (Third) "Using another person's name, portrait or other identity mark for commercial purposes without consent constitutes an infringement of the other person's publicity rights and shall bear liability for damages."

Secondly, the "Trump Life Photo" printed on the T-shirt was taken by an American journalist and is protected by copyright. Using the photo for commercial sales without permission or authorization may also constitute an infringement of the copyright of others' works .

At present, T-shirts printed with scenes of Trump’s assassination have been removed from some domestic e-commerce platforms, and related peripheral products can no longer be found by searching for relevant keywords.

However, at the same time, live sales of such peripheral products are still ongoing overseas (especially in the United States) , and the popularity of related products is further increasing.

At present, some related peripheral products have been put on Amazon's shelves.

In fact, long before the shooting, as it was during the US election, related peripheral products with Trump's image were already hot-selling on cross-border e-commerce platforms such as Amazon. The categories included T-shirts, cups, hats, stickers, etc., and many of them had monthly sales of thousands.

After the shooting, the search volume for related keywords increased significantly , and the popularity of these peripheral products may increase again. Some sellers even joked that these products may become hot items on the upcoming Member Day.

Faced with this business opportunity, many sellers must have been eager to enter the market. However, some sellers pointed out that such peripheral products not only have the risk of infringement, but also can only be regarded as short-term hot products . With multiple sellers entering the market, the competition is already very fierce.

Nowadays, e-commerce platforms such as Amazon are tending towards compliance. If you want to make long-term plans, you need to consider carefully before entering the market for short-term hot products that carry infringement risks.

In addition, affected by the assassination, Trump's chances of winning the US election have further increased. A forecast for the "2024 US election" shows that as of early July 14, Trump's chance of winning is 71% , while Biden's is only 16%.

Faced with this trend, many sellers are also concerned about another important issue: If Trump wins the election, what impact will it have on cross-border e-commerce?

As the saying goes: business is business. Throughout the history of Sino-US relations, the attitude of the US president towards China almost always represents the barometer of Sino-US trade. As Trump's chances of winning the election have further increased recently, here we will simply analyze the possible impact of Trump's election on cross-border e-commerce:

1. Tariffs

If Trump wins the election, he may once again impose tariffs on Chinese products, further increasing the export costs of cross-border sellers .

According to foreign media reports, in February this year, Trump revealed that he might impose tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese goods after his victory . At the same time, in the campaign debate on June 27, Trump reiterated the foreign trade policy of imposing tariffs: a 10% tariff will be imposed on all goods imported from the United States. Once implemented, it may have a serious impact on the profit margins of cross-border sellers.

2. Exchange rate

If Trump wins the election, it may further cause the dollar to depreciate .

According to US media, Trump's team is exploring strategies to devalue the US dollar in order to promote US exports and ease the trade deficit. In late April, Trump also emphasized on his social media platform that if the US dollar continues to rise, US products will be too expensive for overseas markets and US manufacturing will lose competitiveness. The subtext is that he hopes that the devaluation of the US dollar will create favorable conditions for exports.

For cross-border sellers, the depreciation of the US dollar may lead to large foreign exchange losses , further squeezing their profit margins.

3. About TikTok

Unlike Biden, who has repeatedly urged the implementation of the "TikTok ban", Trump's attitude towards TikTok is more inclined to support it .

It is reported that Trump has entered TikTok on June 1. As of the morning of July 15, the number of followers of the account has reached 8 million.

In addition to his previous remarks that "young people cannot live without TikTok", according to foreign media reports on June 15, Trump also said that he "absolutely will not" ban the social platform application TikTok.

In this regard, some sellers questioned whether Trump's statement was made to cater to young voters. However, if Trump's attitude of supporting TikTok is true and firm, it is undoubtedly good news for TikTok content e-commerce sellers .

However, some professionals also pointed out that the impact of the attack on the chances of winning the election is short-term. For now, the results of the US election are still confusing and difficult to predict. It is still unknown which candidate will win the election and what impact he will have on Sino-US trade and cross-border e-commerce after taking office.
