For millions of Americans, spring is the peak season for playing baseball and the time when baseball-related products are in the greatest demand. It is natural for brands and sellers to understand Americans’ shopping trends for baseball products. A new report released by Pattern reveals the consumption trends of baseball products in previous years, including when demand is greatest, what types of baseball equipment and gear are in greatest demand at different times, and when brands should start preparing for the next peak season. Grasping these trends will help sellers prepare before the peak season arrives and seize the opportunity. When is the demand for baseball gear and equipment highest? As can be seen from the graph, demand was at its lowest level of the year at the beginning of the year, but rose rapidly in March, then climbed steadily in April and peaked in May, when demand increased by 15% compared to the annual average. Demand begins to decline as summer arrives, then rebounds to slightly above average during the back-to-school and fall prom seasons, and rises again during the holiday shopping season. So if we rank the times of year when there is the greatest demand for baseball and softball equipment, spring would be first, holiday shopping second, and fall third. What types of baseball gear and equipment are most popular? The report pulls together more than 40 different baseball equipment and categories, and here are the categories that were in the highest demand last year. Baseball equipment and softball equipment are by far the most in demand, and demand levels are almost the same. Baseball apparel is next, ranking third, and men's baseball and softball apparel are in the top five. Women's apparel demand is not far behind. Specific types of equipment that made the top 20 list included: protective gear, baseballs, bats, batting tees and gloves. When is the demand for different types of baseball gear and equipment highest? The report takes a deeper look at some specific categories, and here are the trends for two of the most in-demand categories: As shown in the chart, the trend lines for both categories are essentially the same, with spring being the second-highest demand period for these categories, and monthly demand for baseball and softball equipment increasing slightly during the holiday shopping season. The following chart shows how demand for the men’s and women’s baseball and softball apparel categories changes over the course of a year: Spring is by far the season for men’s baseball and softball apparel, with monthly demand for both categories up 19% in May. Interestingly, demand for women’s baseball and softball apparel is actually below average in the spring, instead climbing in the early fall and peaking during the holiday shopping season. Men’s baseball and softball shoes saw the biggest demand growth during the spring, with demand in May soaring 164% compared to the year-over-year average. Batting weights ranked second, with demand up 127%. Other baseball-related products that are in high demand during the spring include the following categories: The data showed that demand for batting helmets surged earlier than any other product, with demand increasing 122% in March and 150% in April, while most other items saw slight increases in March. In April, demand increased for almost all products, and May was the highest month for all items except batting helmets. In June, demand for every item decreased, but most remained well above their annual averages. What does this mean for brands? According to the above data, spring drives huge demand for all types of baseball and softball equipment, especially special equipment such as helmets and gloves, which rely heavily on the sales peak in April and May. The second peak is the fall back-to-school season and holiday shopping, and sellers need to prepare before the peak arrives.
