Amazon Prime Day will return on July 12-13 this year, and consumers are eager to buy the products ahead of the big promotion. Although Amazon has expanded Prime Day to new markets this year, US sales are still expected to account for more than 60% of Amazon's global Prime Day purchases as American consumers seek deals amid rising costs and continued inflation.

 

What is the consumer sentiment of Amazon buyers on Prime Day this year? Are they more rational consumers or "shopping sprees"? The latest research by data.ai reveals the consumer mentality of global consumers, including Americans, on Prime Day.

 

Data.ai research shows that as inflation costs rise and consumers are looking for cheaper goods, Amazon buyers will spend more time on mobile devices during this year's Prime Day.

 

data.ai projects that during Prime Day week, consumers around the world will break records and spend more than 1 billion hours in shopping apps on Android phones (outside of China), an increase of nearly 40% over last year's Prime Day week.

 

In the U.S. alone, data.ai estimates that consumers will spend 70 million hours in shopping apps on Android phones during Prime Day this year, up 39% from last year and 137% from 2019 before the pandemic.

 

Americans spent more than 75 million hours on shopping apps during the week of Black Friday 2021. While Black Friday has been a popular shopping holiday for decades, Amazon Prime Day has managed to close the gap in just seven years.

 

In recent years, the time U.S. consumers spend on mobile shopping apps during Prime Day has continued to increase.

 

Except for 2020 being pushed back to October and 2021 being moved forward to June. In the past 3 years from 2018 to 2021, the time Americans spent on mobile shopping during Prime Day has skyrocketed by 120%. By 2022, data.ai expects this number to increase by 213% from 2018, indicating that the shift to mobile devices is growing.

 

This year, as many other large retailers also launched promotions to grab the market, Amazon also began to implement new methods to maintain customer loyalty and engagement. For example, Amazon launched the Prime Stampcard this year, which uses gamification to keep users engaged.


As part of the event, Amazon is offering free Prime Day trial memberships for the first time this year in an effort to attract new users to the platform and compete with other retailers.

 

Despite fierce sales competition among retailers, Amazon ranked first in the shopping app category by global downloads during Prime Day during the week of June 20 last year, followed by SHEIN and Shopee. All three apps were also among the top 20 apps in the United States by usage time in May 2022.

 

 

data.ai also predicts that consumer staples tend to be more resilient to inflation than luxury goods, so sales of electronics are expected to decline. At the same time, some apparel and accessories are expected to see high sales given upcoming seasonal events (holidays, summer events, and back to school).
