Amazon once again wins the title of "price butcher"! The lowest prices in 14 categories

According to the sixth edition of the annual "Price War" study released by e-commerce analysis company Profitero, Amazon has become the lowest-priced online retailer in the United States for the sixth consecutive year. The report compares the online prices of nearly 15,000 products in 15 categories from 13 major retailers in the United States.

Profitero found that Amazon had the lowest online prices of all retailers studied, with its average price 13% lower than its competitors, but this gap was smaller than 14% in 2021 and 16% in 2020. Amazon was also the lowest-priced online retailer in the UK.

The study found that Amazon had the lowest prices in 14 categories, but tied with Chewy in the pet category. Retailers such as Walmart, Home Depot and Nordstrom only averaged 2% to 5% more than Amazon on typical holiday gifts. But when it comes to video games and electronics, Amazon's prices are far lower than its competitors.

Walmart ranked second in overall price competitiveness, with online prices averaging 6% higher than Amazon (4% in 2021).

Overall, Walmart's online prices were within 5% of Amazon's in 11 of the 15 categories, with groceries, health and personal care, home furnishings, and vitamins and supplements all within 2%. Categories where Walmart's prices were relatively high included electronics, fashion, tools and home decor, and video games.

Target, Amazon and Walmart are known as the three largest online retailers in the United States. Its price competitiveness is the weakest among the three, with an average price 16% higher than Amazon.

But compared to last year, Target's price advantage has increased significantly. Target has gained an advantage in 8 of the 15 categories studied, most notably in beauty, health and personal care and vitamins and supplements. Toys and games is Target's most competitive category, with only a 6% price difference compared to Amazon.

Of all the online retailers studied, except for Chewy and Walmart, Petco had the most competitive online prices, just 2% higher than Amazon; followed by Nordstrom, 5%; Petsmart, 6%; Home Depot, 10%; Best Buy, 13%; Target, 15%; Walgreens, 27%; Wayfair, 37%; Macy's, 38%; and CVS, 53%.

According to Profitero research this year, Amazon has been the lowest-priced online retailer in the United States for the sixth consecutive year and in the United Kingdom for three consecutive years. As consumers cut spending due to inflation, it remains to be seen whether Amazon can win more sales on price.
