Canada drafts a C$150 billion tariff list to fight back against Trump administration's new tariff policy

It is learned that recently, according to foreign media reports, the Canadian government has drawn up a list of US goods worth 150 billion Canadian dollars (about 105 billion US dollars) in response to the Trump administration's possible policy of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

It is understood that this list is still in the draft stage and will only take effect if the Trump administration takes the lead. The implementation of this measure may also be adjusted according to the specific actions of the United States.

Previously, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products in 2018, and Canada subsequently imposed tariffs on a range of US-made goods, such as whiskey and washing machines. This move was intended to influence factories in regions controlled by Republican politicians by exerting political pressure. At that time, Canada's total tariffs were about 16.6 billion Canadian dollars, far lower than the 150 billion Canadian dollars in the current draft.

According to data, Canada imported C$487 billion worth of goods from the United States in the 12 months ending November 2023. Therefore, the proposed retaliatory tariffs will cover nearly one-third of the value of goods Canada purchases from the United States.
