More than 50% of pet owners will prepare gifts! The peak season for pet sales in the United States is coming!

According to a new survey conducted by Personal Capital in cooperation with Morning Consult, Americans are cutting back on their holiday spending and shopping lists due to concerns about inflation and recession. However, their enthusiasm for buying is still very high, especially for pet supplies.

The survey shows that this year, the average holiday shopping budget of Americans will be about $200 less (23%) than last year. In order to cover their expenses in December, 47% of people will reduce their purchases of dining out and other non-essential items, which is 9% more than in 2021. 37% of people will spend $250 or less on gifts, and 16% will spend $100 less than last year.

The survey found that this holiday season, Americans are most concerned about:

1. DIY and second-hand gifts

According to the survey, 45% of Americans will give DIY and second-hand gifts. Among them, a quarter of Generation Z and Millennials said they will make gifts for themselves and others this year, which is much higher than other groups.

Those who don’t like haggling at their local thrift store are choosing to shop online. This year, 34% of Americans say they will increase their online shopping, and they are particularly interested in shopping at retailers that offer free (79%) and fast shipping (77%).

2. Pet Products

19% of people said they would buy gifts for their loved ones during this holiday season, 34% of dog owners said they would prepare gifts for their dogs, and 22% of cat owners would prepare gifts for their cats, and only 7% would prepare gifts for teachers. It can be seen that pet owners are very willing to spend money on their "pets".

3. Shopping for yourself

The survey found that the most popular gifts this holiday season are gift cards (52%), cash (24%), slippers and socks. Although 73% of people will look for gifts for others, nearly a quarter of people (23%) will spend money on themselves. Among those who spend money on themselves, they are more focused on food and DIY supplies.
