Walmart holds 37% of U.S. online grocery market share in Q2, a record high

Walmart holds 37% of U.S. online grocery market share in Q2, a record high

It is learned that on August 6, according to foreign media reports, Walmart accounted for 37% of the US online grocery market in the second quarter, setting the highest share level to date.

According to the "2024 Q2 U.S. Online Grocery Market Share Report", Walmart (excluding Sam's Club) has a 37% share of the U.S. online grocery market, up 150 basis points from the same period last year. In contrast, supermarkets continue to lose share in online groceries, falling 250 basis points in the second quarter from the same period last year to a share of 27.3%.

Walmart's sales began to surpass supermarkets in early 2022 after the child tax credit policy expired at the end of 2021. As overall inflation and food inflation grew faster than wages, personal savings rates fell sharply, and rising bank interest rates further challenged families, causing more American consumers to turn to large online retailers.

David Bishop, partner at Brick Meets Click, said that Walmart is known for its low prices, which attracts families who want to enjoy the convenience of online shopping while saving money. Through the implementation of the omni-channel strategy and the improvement of operational efficiency brought by high order demand, Walmart can continue to provide the experience that customers expect while reducing the cost of serving online orders.

At the same time, Target, one of the largest U.S. retailers, has seen relatively modest share growth in the past few years, accounting for 7% of the online grocery market share in the second quarter, up 120 basis points from the second quarter of 2021. The report said that Target's strong execution in fulfilling pickup orders and the price gap between supermarkets and Walmart provided some protection for its online grocery business.

Overall, pickup remains the leading delivery method for online grocery sales in the U.S., accounting for 45.5% of sales in the second quarter. However, driven by Walmart's nearly 8% jump in delivery share from the same period last year, large retailers accounted for nearly half of all delivery sales in the second quarter.
