Recently, the US social market Poshmark found that the search volume for "wedding dresses" on its website increased by 12%. Since July to September is one of the busiest wedding seasons in the United States, various wedding-related activities during this period, from pre-wedding parties to bachelor parties, weddings and honeymoons, can cost a lot of money. In response to this situation, more and more brides are beginning to seek more affordable ways to realize their dream weddings. Additionally, wedding celebrations call for a lot of fun and festive bridal fashions, but what brides wear to their weddings may not be suitable for their daily lives. Resale allows brides to recoup the value of disposable wedding dresses that are likely to be stored in a warehouse after the wedding. And it’s not just brides who are looking for a deal. The cost of bridesmaids and guests attending weddings is a big expense, from dresses to flights to accommodations. Through the secondhand market, wedding guests can purchase wedding clothing at a very low price. According to research by The Knot Real Weddings, the average price of a wedding dress is about $2,000, with more luxurious gowns costing upwards of $5,000 and custom gowns costing $10,000. However, many brides are reluctant to spend a fortune on a dress they will only wear once. “More and more brides are choosing to purchase their wedding dresses through resale sites,” said Chloe Baffert, head of merchandising and planning at Poshmark. “Through secondhand shopping, brides can find their dream wedding dress that may be out of their budget, or a designer’s style from last season that is no longer available in retail stores or even a vintage style that is no longer in print. As a result, many brides, bridesmaids and guests are turning to secondhand retailers to purchase their wedding dresses.” Poshmark found that searches for BHLDN dresses, which specializes in wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, bridal accessories and wedding decor, increased 41 percent, while searches for Lulu wedding or bridesmaid dresses increased 21 percent and searches for Birdy Gray dresses increased 22 percent. Social media has influenced the way many people shop. It is not uncommon for Instagram users to follow trends, snap a photo of their outfit, and then never wear it again. Because people don’t like to wear a piece of clothing too many times, a piece of clothing can be worn once and then sold again, which indirectly promotes the growth of the second-hand market.
