Walmart has recently launched two new augmented reality features designed to enhance buyers' online and offline shopping experience. The first augmented reality feature is scheduled to be launched on Walmart's iOS and Android apps early next month, allowing consumers to view and purchase furniture and home decorations under the AR function at home. Walmart will initially offer 300 products for display and plans to expand this product range to back-to-school items in the coming months. “View in Your Space” AR feature The feature is accessed by tapping the “View in Your Space” banner on an item in the Walmart app. Thanks to this feature, AR technology allows buyers to drag and drop products wherever they want and display the dimensions of those furniture on their smartphone screen. Buyers can also connect a camera and view the furniture or decor they are interested in in a home environment. The feature allows buyers to “switch item sizes to check if the item will fit in your space and take a photo for later.” The “View in Your Space” feature also includes haptic feedback, which vibrates when buyers move items to alert buyers and prevent items from being placed outside the room boundaries. Walmart said the “See in Your Space” AR feature was extensively tested with customers before it was decided to make it widely available. The feedback was “overwhelmingly positive,” according to a blog post by Brock McKeel, senior site experience for Walmart e-commerce, and Cherly Ainoa, senior vice president of new business and emerging technologies for Walmart Global Technology. The team behind the app has also taken steps to make it accessible to people with limited vision or mobility. Screen reader-friendly instructions guide people through the new features, and optional gesture navigation can also be a big help for people who have trouble navigating the traditional, precise drag-and-drop interface. Walmart also plans to track some traditional metrics to see if the rollout of this new feature reduces purchase volume and friction in buying. In-store AR features It is learned that another AR feature that Walmart is testing is an in-store feature that allows buyers to point their mobile phone cameras at store shelves and get products based on their personal preferences. Buyers can also filter products that meet specific criteria such as price or ingredients by pointing to the shelves. They can also get product information so that buyers can determine whether this product meets their nutritional needs. They can also automatically obtain coupons and allow buyers to view clothing of the selected model that matches their appearance. In addition, Walmart's Sam's Club recently launched a virtual try-on feature for glasses that can be purchased through its optical store.
