New delivery method


According to foreign media reports, Amazon will work with Japan Postal Service to launch a new delivery method, which is expected to be implemented nationwide next year.



As a country with a serious aging population and labor shortage, Japan's labor costs have always been expensive. Previously, Japan's multiple deliveries meant that shipping companies needed to add about 90,000 workers each year. In order to improve customer experience and save costs. Amazon Japan is going to launch a new delivery method that will place packages at the customer's door or garage. The courier will take a photo of the package at the delivery location and then send it to the recipient via an app or email.




Amazon will refund or replace items if a package is stolen or damaged, and the company will also work to alleviate customer concerns about home deliveries, such as theft risk and visibility of shipping labels.


It is understood that most parcels in Japan need to be delivered in person, which means that about 20% of parcels require multiple attempts. This results in the need to add about 90,000 workers each year, which is a heavy burden for a country with a labor shortage.


However, this delivery method goes against Japanese culture. After all, there is no clear conclusion on who is responsible if the package is stolen or damaged. And according to the New York Times, 90,000 packages disappear in New York every day. The safety of the package is the top priority for the full implementation of this plan.


It is understood that in the delivery test conducted by Japan Post and Amazon in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, the duplicate delivery rate dropped from more than 20% to 10%.
