The secrets of the US holiday season trend are revealed! More than 70% of people will shop on e-commerce platforms!

It is learned that in order to help sellers better prepare for the 2023 holiday shopping season, market research firm Insider Intelligence recently combined data from eBay Ads to reveal possible popular trends, hot-selling categories, and advertising placement techniques.

1. Online marketplaces will be a major player in the US holiday season

According to eBay Ads, 71% of U.S. consumers plan to make holiday purchases on e-commerce platforms.

Insider Intelligence predicts that total U.S. e-commerce sales will grow by 10.2% to $384.57 billion in 2023. Of this, online markets are expected to account for 33.5% of U.S. e-commerce sales. In terms of sales, the most popular is Amazon, followed by eBay, Etsy and Walmart.

2. Clothing and accessories are sold earlier than consumer electronics

During the holiday season last year, searches for sweatshirts and blankets began to increase in the first week of October and stopped around the end of December, according to eBay Ads. Searches for remote-controlled toys began to rise around November 13, for headphones around November 20, and for video games around December 4.

Insider Intelligence predicts that apparel and accessories will account for 21.5% of all U.S. holiday e-commerce sales, while computers and consumer electronics will account for 18.2%. These two categories are roughly the same as last year.

3. Retail media advertising drives product discovery

Data shows that 81% of eBay buyers are likely to click on a promoted listing to learn more information, and 39% of eBay buyers say ads influence their purchasing decisions.

Insider Intelligence points out that retail media advertising can not only promote sales growth, but also help sellers increase the exposure of their products.

4. Discounts help increase conversions

Data from eBay Ads shows that 46% of holiday shoppers want to get the best deal at the last minute. On the other hand, more than half (53%) of shoppers say price is a top priority when shopping for gifts.

According to Integral Ad Science, consumers are more likely to make a purchase from promotional ads than from other retail media ads. Promotional ads encourage people to buy, especially during peak sales seasons.
