Halloween spending in the U.S. is expected to reach $11.6 billion in 2024, with early shopping trend rising

It is learned that according to foreign media reports a few days ago, according to an annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, total Halloween spending in the United States in 2024 is expected to reach 11.6 billion US dollars, down from 12.2 billion US dollars last year, among which costumes, decorations and candy are the most popular.

It is understood that the survey asked 7,945 consumers about their Halloween shopping plans. The survey shows that the number of consumers who shop for Halloween in advance is increasing, with 47% of consumers starting shopping before October, up from 37% five years ago. Despite the rising trend of early shopping, the average spending is expected to decrease slightly. Data shows that consumers participating in Halloween activities plan to spend an average of $103.63, a decrease of $4.62 from last year's record high of $108.24.

Phil Rist, executive vice president of strategy at Prosper Insights & Analytics, noted that consumers aged 25 to 34 are particularly good at shopping in advance, with 56% saying they will complete their shopping before October. Nearly half of consumers said that because Halloween is their favorite holiday, they tend to prepare in advance.

In terms of shopping channels, discount stores (37%) remain the top destination for consumers to purchase Halloween items, followed by Halloween/costume stores (33%) and online shopping (33%). Among the major categories of Halloween spending, candy dominates, with total spending expected to reach $3.5 billion. In addition, consumers are expected to spend a total of $3.8 billion on decorations, $3.8 billion on costumes, and $500 million on greeting cards.

In terms of costume spending, total spending on adult costumes is expected to remain the same as last year, reaching $1.8 billion, while spending on children's costumes is expected to be $1.3 billion. Consumer demand for pet costumes remains stable, expected to reach $700 million. When looking for inspiration for Halloween costumes, the main sources include online searches (38%), retail stores or costume stores (28%), and friends and family (20%).

Specifically, 2.6 million children plan to dress up as Spiderman, 1.8 million choose to dress up as ghosts, 1.7 million will dress up as princesses, and 1.6 million will dress up as witches. Among adults, 5.8 million plan to dress up as witches, 3 million choose vampires, 1.6 million dress up as cats, 1.5 million dress up as Batman, and another 1.4 million will choose to dress up as pirates. For pet costumes, pumpkins (10%), hot dogs (6%), bats (4%), ghosts (3%), and bumblebees (3%) are popular choices this year.
