Introduction

This year is really a big year for cross-border e-commerce capital! On November 22, 2020, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange disclosed the prospectus of Vesync Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as " Vesync "), the parent company of Shenzhen's Chenbei Technology, which ranks among the top 3 small home appliances on Amazon's US site, after the hearing. It will soon be listed on the main board of Hong Kong. Vesync previously applied for a Hong Kong IPO on June 28, 2020, with BNP Paribas Securities and Chuangsheng Financing as its joint sponsors.

It is reported that Vesync is a Shenzhen company that sells small home appliances in the United States through online sales channels (mainly Amazon). It focuses on online marketing and sales of small home appliances and smart home devices designed and developed independently under its increasingly well-known brand. Its products are mainly sold to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, etc. At present, the company has three core brands (Etekcity, Levoit and Cosori), and its main products are as follows:

Market Position

Judging from the sales of Vesync's products, the company did not "deepen" in a certain small household appliance category, but adopted a multi-category strategy, the core of which is mainly market segmentation. Currently, the company sells a total of 6 categories of small household appliances, covering multiple application scenarios from home cleaning, kitchen utensils, outdoor and so on.

However, there are still differences in the sales of its products. Among the company's products, home environment appliances and kitchen appliances account for the largest sales. Among them, the sales of home environment appliances, mainly air purifiers and vacuum cleaners, increased significantly from 166,000 units in 2017 to 1.223 million units in 2019. The sales details of the three core brands are as follows:

Benefiting from the rising product rankings and market trends in 2019. In the first half of this year, Vesync's revenue increased by 71.7% compared with the same period last year. During this period, the sales of its main product categories - home environment appliances (such as air purifiers), kitchen appliances and dining utensils (such as air fryers), and health monitoring equipment increased by 152.4%, 119.2% and 36.9% compared with the same period last year.

Channel share

Vesync is a genuine Amazon seller , and most of Vesync's revenue comes from Amazon. According to its prospectus, Vesync ranked third in the same category of small appliances in Amazon's sales in the United States in 2019 , ranked first in the air purifier category , and ranked second in the air fryer category . From 2017 to 2019, Vesync's revenue was US$85.21 million, US$145 million, and US$172 million, respectively, with a compound annual growth rate of 83.5%. The annual net profit was US$1.867 million, US$4.361 million, and US$6.372 million, respectively.

From the sales market perspective, North America contributed over 80% of the revenue, of which the United States' sales revenue reached US$99.028 million, accounting for 76.6% , and Canada and other countries' revenue accounted for 8.2%; the European market also contributed over 13% of the revenue.

In 2019, the US market became the world's largest market for small appliances and smart home devices, with smart device shipments accounting for 29.6% of the market share. This is also an important reason why Vesync focuses on the US market.

From another perspective, more than 95% of the annual revenue comes from the same platform. For a company with a scale of RMB 1 billion, it is a bit too dependent on Amazon.

VC giants

Most domestic sellers operate on the Amazon platform through SC accounts (Seller Central), and some sellers have VC accounts (Vendor Central). Judging from the distribution of Vesync’s revenue on Amazon, it is also an out-and-out VC giant.

In 2017, 2018, 2019 and the first half of 2019 and 2020, Vesync generated revenue of approximately US$77.5 million, US$102.4 million, US$83.2 million, US$43.7 million and US$45.6 million through Amazon's Seller Central program, respectively, accounting for approximately 91.0%, 70.7%, 48.4%, 58.1% and 35.3% of total revenue, respectively.

During the same period, the revenue generated through Amazon's Vendor Central program was approximately US$7.2 million, US$41.4 million, US$87.3 million, US$30.9 million and US$79.1 million, respectively, accounting for approximately 8.4%, 28.6%, 50.8%, 41.0% and 61.2% of the total revenue, respectively.

VC account revenue continues to grow, and Amazon has essentially become a bulk purchasing customer of Vesync. As Amazon's purchase amount increases, its bargaining power with Vesync will become stronger and stronger, which may also affect Vesync's future profitability.

Of course, VC accounts are generally less risky . Vesync disclosed that SC’s account was frozen three times, while VC’s account had no freezing record.

Competitive Advantage

Vesync has more than 60 Best Sellers and started to develop air purifiers as early as 2015. In the HEPA Filter Air Purifiers category, Levoit brand has 2 listings with more than 20,000 reviews, and its comprehensive accumulation far exceeds other brands.

Especially in the magical year of 2020, under the double blow of the COVID-19 pandemic and the wildfires in California, the air purifier market in the United States has become a gold-digging category that generates tens of millions (billions) of profits. Currently, all the industry's best sellers are present: American local brands Honeywell Home and TaoTronics. Among them, LEVOIT has 10 listings, accounting for 10% of the total number of listings, but its sales account for 30.15% of the total number of Best sellers TOP 100.

Final Words

The field of small home appliances and smart home is a track with a very large growth rate. Currently, a large number of powerful cross-border e-commerce sellers are making plans. Vesync's listing also gives Amazon sellers great hope. Maizi also hopes that all seller friends can learn from Vesync's growth process and ideas, find opportunities that suit them, and explore development paths!
