It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Amazon recently plans to spend about $290 million to build a distribution center on Highway 6 in Johnston. At present, the Johnston Planning Commission has approved the preliminary site plan and will hold a public hearing on September 15 to discuss whether to grant final authorization.
The agreement between the government and Amazon was outlined in a document filed with the Secretary of State's office ahead of the meeting.
Under the deal, Amazon agreed to make a series of payments to Johnston and the state for various utilities that are expected to exceed $12 million over the next 20 years.
Under the tax treaty agreement, Amazon's annual property taxes will be $5.7 million starting in January 2024, increasing to $9.1 million by 2044. Johnston currently collects $60,000 a year on undeveloped land.
In addition, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has agreed to provide $2.7 million in state funds for the project.
