According to data.ai's latest market trends, consumers will flock to apps to conduct shopping research, compare prices and seek discounts in response to rising prices during this holiday season. Retailers need to optimize the mobile shopping experience to grab market share.
As the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) hits a record high due to ongoing inflation, mobile shopping remains at an all-time high despite rising prices. As of August 2022, US consumers' mobile shopping time increased by 10% year-on-year. Holiday season visits reach 850 billion, mobile shopping becomes a trend
Data.ai predicts mobile shopping trends during the holiday season, including: In the fourth quarter of this year, global shopping app visits outside of China will exceed 450 billion, a year-on-year increase of nearly 22%. Including China, global shopping app visits jumped to nearly 850 billion, a year-on-year increase of 15%. In the fourth quarter of 2022, digital traffic to Android shopping apps will approach 28 billion in the United States alone, up nearly 10% year-over-year. Specifically, during the two-week Black Friday and Cyber Monday period, Americans are expected to spend more than 150 million hours in Android shopping apps, up 41% from pre-pandemic levels in the fourth quarter of 2019.
As data.ai’s recent retail report points out, consumer engagement with shopping apps is nearly twice as high as downloads, and the increase in app engagement shows that mobile shopping is becoming a trend.
Three key areas of e-commerce growth during the holiday season Data.ai expects that in the fourth quarter, the three growth areas of the US e-commerce market during the holiday season include: Increased demand for coupons and exclusive offers and benefits; · Apparel performed strongly; Luxury brand sales growth.
Amid rising inflation, U.S. consumers are more likely to look for deals, which is expected to be the main driver of consumer shopping behavior during Black Friday Cyber Monday.
According to data.ai’s AppIQ, coupon and cashback app downloads saw the highest growth rate among all shopping apps in the United States in the first half of 2022, up 31% year-over-year. Globally, the figure was 24%.
In addition to coupons and deals, apparel is also expected to perform strongly during the holiday season. In the United States, SHEIN ranked second in downloads, behind Amazon, followed by Walmart. What's more, in the first half of 2022 and the first half of 2021, the most downloaded apps in the United States were apparel shopping apps. Another key sector expected to grow is luxury goods, which are likely to perform well this holiday season as spending by high-income consumers continues to be strong despite inflation. Finally, data.ai pointed out that as we enter this year’s holiday season, brands and sellers should fully consider consumers’ mobile shopping experience and offer greater discounts to attract consumers who prioritize saving money, as they will spend more time on mobile devices than ever before.
