According to foreign media reports, Snapchat recently announced the acquisition of AR startup Vertebrae. In the first quarter of 2021, Snapchat's revenue reached US$770 million, an increase of nearly two-thirds (66%). It can be seen that Snapchat's entry into AR e-commerce is worthy of attention.
The report noted that Vertebrae can help Snapchat create digital 3D versions of its products, which can then be virtually tried out through AR and purchased directly from the platform.
Snapchat has mastered AR technology since it launched Lenses (AR camera app) in 2016. In 2018, Snapchat first tried to use AR in the field of e-commerce when it added a "Buy" button on Nike's AR lens.
In April of this year, Snapchat acquired Screenshop, a product recommendation platform. Screenshop can recommend clothing to users based on the photos they take. Screenshop combines AR technology to allow users to try on clothes using AR and provide real-time product and price updates.
According to a survey, only 10% of American adults have used AR or VR for shopping. According to Shopify data, the conversion rate of interacting with products through AR is 94% higher than that of products without AR. Although AR shopping is still in its infancy in the United States, the future market potential is very large.
