Biden signs law banning sale of baby sleep products! Affects two major categories

It is learned that on May 16, Biden signed the "Infant Safe Sleep Act of 2021", which will ban the production and sale of inclined cribs and cribs with safety bars.

The products have been linked to nearly 200 deaths in the U.S. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented 83 deaths related to crib bumpers and 97 deaths from inclined cribs, lawmakers said.

Some upholstered sleep products pose a suffocation risk to infants who could roll onto the upholstered surface. The legislation would ban cribs that are "marketed or designed" for infants under one year old with an incline greater than 10 degrees. The legislation also seeks to ban upholstered cribs with vinyl bumpers, excluding non-upholstered cribs.

The two products will be designated as hazardous products prohibited under the Consumer Product Safety Act within 180 days of enactment. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants sleep alone and on their backs on a firm, flat surface.

In recent years, many companies have sold inclined cribs that have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Among them, Fisher-Price's popular Rock'nPlay crib was launched in 2009 and was recalled a decade later in 2019 after about 4.7 million units were sold.
