2021 US Christmas sales reached 886.7 billion US dollars! A record high in 20 years!

It is learned that according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), driven by the recurrence of the epidemic and the disruption of the supply chain, Americans rushed to shop online, and the US Christmas season sales in 2021 reached a record high of 886.7 billion US dollars, far exceeding the 777.3 billion US dollars in 2020. Christmas sales, including e-commerce, increased by 14.1% in November and December, creating the largest sales in 20 years, exceeding the latest forecast of 11.5% growth, and far higher than the 8.2% increase in 2020.

The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year for U.S. retailers, and shipping delays and resulting product shortages caused by the pandemic have become the norm in the past two years. To ensure supply, retailers such as Walmart and Target have diverted goods to less crowded ports and even rented their own ships to get holiday goods on the shelves in time.

NRF data shows that U.S. retail sales in November and December increased by 18.8% and 16.9% year-on-year. The Omicron variant in December caused offline retail sales to be 2.7% lower than in November, but e-commerce sales increased by 11.3% year-on-year. NRF expects retail sales to grow further in 2022. The following are details of the sales growth of offline retail categories in the 2021 U.S. Christmas season:

  • Clothing and accessories (+33.1%)
  • Sporting goods (+20.9%)
  • Home furnishings (+15.2%)
  • Furniture and home furnishings (+15%)
  • Electronics and appliances (+13.8%)
  • Garden supplies (+13.5%)
  • Health and personal products (+9.6%)
  • Groceries and beverages (+8.6%)
