Black Friday online shopping in the US sets new records! Sales of multiple categories soar!

According to Adobe Analytics, US consumers spent $9.12 billion on online shopping on Black Friday (November 25) this year, up 2.3% year-on-year. Despite the adverse factors such as inflation and economic recession, online shopping spending still hit a record high.

The data shows that online sales of electronics were very strong, 221% higher than the October 2022 average. Toys (285%), smart home items (up 271%), audio equipment (up 230%) and fitness equipment (218%) were also hot sellers.

In the toys category, hot-selling products include Fortnite, Roblox, Bluey, Funko Pop! and Disney Encanto, among others. In the video games category, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 devices are very popular, as are FIFA 23, NBA 2k23 and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. In other categories, the best-selling products include drones, Apple MacBooks and Dyson products (hairdryers, vacuum cleaners).

Faced with inflation and rising prices, American consumers are seeking more flexible payment methods. Compared with the previous week (November 19-25), the number of buy now pay later (BNPL) transactions on November 25 increased by 78% and the transaction amount increased by 81%.

Mobile shopping is gaining momentum among U.S. consumers. Data from Adobe Analytics shows that 48% of online sales in the U.S. on Black Friday this year came from smartphones, up from 44% last year.

Adobe predicts that e-commerce sales over the Cyber Monday weekend in the United States will also be very strong, with online shoppers expected to spend more than $9 billion online (November 26: $4.52 billion, November 27: $4.99 billion).

Adobe highlighted that Cyber Monday will be the biggest online shopping day of the season (and the year), driving US e-commerce sales to grow by $11.2 billion, or 5.1%.

Notably, small retailers ($10-50 million in annual revenue) will see three times less online sales as a result of the recession compared to large retailers (over $1 billion in annual revenue).
