U.S. Halloween shoppers expected to spend an average of $172 as inflation weighs on spending decisions


It is learned that on October 14, according to foreign media reports, according to the "2024 Halloween Consumption Report" released by LendingTree, despite continued inflationary pressure, the average spending of American consumers during Halloween this year is expected to reach US$172, higher than US$162 in 2023.


It is understood that the report surveyed more than 2,000 American consumers. The data showed that due to inflation, 59% of consumers will give up buying Halloween supplies this year, including decorations (30%), candies (28%) and party supplies (23%). Despite this, 47% of Halloween shoppers still plan to make "big purchases", mainly for costumes (17%), decorations (16%) and participating in theme activities (14%).


The report pointed out that there are obvious differences in consumer spending levels. Women are expected to spend $115, men are expected to spend $225, and millennials are expected to spend even more, reaching $233. In addition, parents with children under 18 are expected to spend $260, and those with an annual income of more than $100,000 are expected to spend $299.


The report also pointed out that different generations have different shopping priorities. 22% of millennials aged 28 to 43 plan to spend more on Halloween decorations, while 18% of Generation Z plan to visit Halloween-themed attractions. In addition, among all generations, Generation Z is the most likely group to reduce holiday shopping, with 74% planning to cut back on spending.


Although many consumers plan to cut back on spending, candy remains a popular item on Halloween shopping lists, with 59% of U.S. consumers planning to buy it. In addition, consumers also plan to buy costumes for themselves (18%), their children (22%) or their pets (13%), and plan to purchase indoor (20%) and outdoor (23%) decorations. Ten percent of consumers also plan to buy Halloween-related food and beverages (excluding candy), and 16% are also preparing to buy holiday crafts.
