More than 80% of Americans plan to shop on Independence Day! These categories are the most in demand!

According to a new survey conducted by market research firm Numerator, most American consumers plan to celebrate Independence Day, also known as the National Day. 87% of the 2,600 American consumers surveyed plan to celebrate this holiday.

Notably, more U.S. consumers plan to celebrate Independence Day in 2023 than last year (84% of consumers surveyed) and more than this year’s Memorial Day (75% of consumers surveyed).

The survey shows that almost all respondents (94%) plan to shop on Independence Day (July 4), with food topping the shopping list (83% of consumers plan to buy), followed by alcoholic beverages (47%), non-alcoholic beverages (34%), decorations (22%) and party supplies (20%).

Two-fifths of respondents expect inflation or a potential economic slowdown to affect their plans for Independence Day celebrations in 2023, and three-quarters are looking for ways to save money (including 52% who said they would buy discounted items).

Additionally, three in ten (31%) will prepare more affordable groceries, 27% will use more coupons, 20% will shop at dollar or discount stores, 16% will buy store/private brand, 11% will stock up on smaller items and 9% will travel less.

The most important celebration plan for American consumers on Independence Day in 2023 is to watch fireworks (60% of respondents plan to attend), followed by barbecue/barbecue (58%) and attending or hosting a gathering/party (46%).

Numerator also found that in the weeks leading up to Independence Day, sales of the following foods increased significantly, including beef burgers and patties (+62% in 2022), hot dogs (+45%), deli salads (+33%), vegetable trays and mixed fresh vegetables (+28%), and potato chips (+19%).

Among respondents who plan to buy alcohol, the top choice is beer (68% plan to buy it this year, compared to 62% in 2022), followed by wine (35% vs. 31%), ready-to-drink cocktails (27% vs. 23%) and spirits (27% vs. 23%).
