77% of American adults will buy second-hand items during the peak season! Clothing accounts for the largest proportion of spending!

It is learned that recently, according to the latest survey of Mercari, a second-hand resale platform, 77% of American adults said that they will buy at least one second-hand item during the peak shopping season, which means that from October to December 2021, consumers will spend US$69.2 billion on second-hand goods, a year-on-year increase of 24%.

According to a Mercari survey, 72% of American consumers said that the reason they buy second-hand items is to save money. Other reasons include: finding bargains, that is, looking for new or nearly new items (36%), making purchases more convenient (32%) and paying attention to sustainable development (22%).

It is worth mentioning that 62% of consumers said they are also worried about supply chain issues and fear that the purchased goods will be in short supply. Mercari CEO John Lagerling said that about 20 million Americans will buy second-hand goods to avoid supply chain problems.

Mercari said that during this year’s peak shopping season, 40% of consumers intend to buy second-hand gifts, and clothing will be the most purchased product, followed by toys and games (36%), home decor (35%), electronics (27%) and handbags (27%).

Here are some other data from Mercari:

  • The average consumer will spend $342 on second-hand items, a year-on-year increase of 17.2%.

  • 49% of consumers will purchase second-hand items for themselves or their family.

  • On average, each person received 3.8 gifts, and approximately 997 million (nearly 1 billion) items were resold.

  • 36% of Americans plan to resell their gifts
