It is learned that according to research by market research firm PYMNTS, 32% of Americans shopped online in December 2021, a significant increase in the number of people.

PYMNTS research pointed out that in December, sales in various categories increased to varying degrees. Among them, food and groceries were the categories with the largest purchase volume and the highest consumption level. The number of online purchases was nearly 2.5 times higher than the annual average, and 13% of Americans switched from physical store shopping to online shopping.

It is worth noting that although the epidemic has restricted Americans' travel, online shoppers' spending on travel products in December was still very strong, with total spending reaching $5.2 billion and an average spending of $381 per transaction. 14% of Americans made travel-related purchases, and sales in this category have increased by 21% since November.

PYMNTS also pointed out that in December this year, U.S. consumers (12%) preferred to shop online via mobile devices, slightly lower than in November (14%). In addition, the number of consumers who used desktop computers and laptops (11%) to make purchases increased compared to November.

It is learned that when it comes to online shopping payments, American consumers prefer to use credit cards and digital wallets to pay. Among them, 57% of consumers said they used PayPal, Venmo and Zelle for payment in online shopping.

PYMNTS research shows that Venmo's payment times have increased significantly in December. 19% of online shoppers said they used the Venmo app to make a purchase, an increase from November (16%). Among them, this payment method is most popular among Generation Z (29%) and Generation X (23%).
