Health Canada has recalled a number of products due to health and safety concerns in the past few weeks, and has recently announced the recall of a shampoo due to the detection of benzene in the product.
Health Canada warns in the recall that benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Humans can be exposed to the substance through inhalation, oral administration and skin exposure and cause cancer, including leukemia and bone marrow blood cancers and potentially life-threatening blood disorders. Fortunately, based on exposure models and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published cancer risk assessment (IRIS database), the levels detected in the recalled products will not cause adverse health effects.
As of December 16, the company had not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the product.
The recall involves Herbal Essences and Pantene Aerosol Spray Dry Shampoo and Aerosol Spray Dry Conditioner, which are currently sold at Costco. Costco said consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and return them to a Costco warehouse for a full refund.
