Walmart builds a new large distribution center to compete with Amazon in the logistics field

It is learned that Walmart recently announced plans to open a large distribution center in south-central Pennsylvania this spring. The center covers an area of 1.8 million square feet and will serve as Walmart's supply chain center to enhance its e-commerce distribution capabilities.

The center will reportedly provide up to 600 permanent full-time jobs to handle the receipt, warehousing and delivery of products to stores, and will be able to accommodate millions of items. It is reported that Walmart has 7 distribution centers and 160 retail stores in Pennsylvania, with more than 60,000 employees.

Walmart's e-commerce sales have grown by more than 70% since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with most of the growth occurring in 2020. Walmart has been committed to challenging Amazon's e-commerce dominance and maintaining its crown as the largest retailer in the United States.

Walmart's e-commerce growth rate over the past two years has cut into Amazon's market share to some extent, Forbes reported last fall.

Walmart customers tend to shop for items like groceries, cleaning supplies and over-the-counter medicines, while Amazon customers primarily buy clothing, vitamins, supplements, beauty care and personal products.

One of Walmart's main advantages is its large number of offline physical stores, which it believes can be a major driver of its online sales, with an increasing number of stores being used as distribution centers.

The expansion of Walmart's new fulfillment center comes as Amazon continues to invest in its delivery capabilities in Philadelphia, where it opened four last-mile delivery centers last year and built several large distribution centers.
