Although U.S. consumers are experiencing rising prices due to unprecedented inflation, a new survey conducted by Slickdeals, which surveyed 2,000 adults in the United States, shows that most Americans prefer high-quality goods to cheap ones.
Another survey shows that Americans are also keen on buying foreign goods and cross-border online shopping because domestic products cannot meet consumer demand well. These trends may have a certain impact on this year's holiday shopping trends.
60% of people are willing to spend more money to buy high-quality goods
According to a Slickdeals survey, 60% of respondents said they would rather pay more for something of better quality than settle for a cheaper alternative.
More than 60% of consumers surveyed believe that investing in higher quality goods can ultimately save replacement costs, as well as the time and energy spent researching and purchasing new items.
When it comes to big-ticket items, most Americans prefer to buy better quality items. Nearly 30% said they would pay more for better quality televisions, 34% said cars and kitchen appliances, and 26% said jewelry.
While budgeting and cutting spending are top of mind for many consumers, with 84% saying inflation will keep them from buying anything that isn’t on sale during the holidays, highlighting the quality of your merchandise is also an important consideration for sellers.
Passionate about foreign goods, more than half of consumers buy Chinese products
Online payment service provider PayU recently released its latest survey of US customers, focusing on driving adoption of cross-border payments in the country.
The survey found that 53% of Americans purchased online goods and services in China in 2021, and by 2023, the United States is expected to have 300 million online shoppers. This is not only a great opportunity for international merchants to take advantage of, but also shows that many customers have needs that cannot be met domestically.
According to PayU's survey, 48% of all people who buy goods from foreign online retailers choose to buy at least once a month. In addition, in addition to China, the destination markets for Americans' overseas shopping also include Europe, Canada, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
The survey shows that price and convenience are a major factor driving U.S. consumers to choose international retailers. Some consumers are still reluctant to buy from online retailers outside the United States, citing high shipping costs (including taxes), as well as complicated return policies and similar products that can be purchased nationwide.
The survey conducted by PayU also revealed that US consumers have to use multiple payment methods when shopping overseas, and 55% of respondents said they would abandon a purchase if their preferred payment method was not available.
Additionally, Americans are less keen on using alternative payment methods such as Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) for international purchases, preferring instead to purchase with credit cards, as most of them have a relatively low average level of total purchases.
