Survey on consumer trends during the US holiday season! These gifts are popular this year...

According to a survey by Oracle Retail, 36% of American consumers are worried that holiday gifts will become more expensive due to continued high inflation. 34% of consumers do not plan to spend money due to concerns about increased expenses, but the vast majority of consumers will still go on a shopping spree.

 

The survey shows that some consumers are taking the following steps to reduce the cost of holiday shopping:

 

  • 71% of people said they would shop in physical stores to find the right gift
  • 77% of people said they would "shop around" to get more offers and discounts
  • 77% of people shop in advance to ensure that they have more time to choose and buy the products they want.
  • 71% of people will wait for retailers to have a “big sale”
  • 75% of people do more price comparisons online and in-store
  • 73% would consider shopping at a retailer that offers more discounts
  • Nearly 60% said the recession would cause them to spend less overall during the holidays
  • 47% of people said price was the main factor that influenced their holiday purchases
  • Seven in ten (71%) plan to wait for major retail sales events such as Black Friday (47%) and post-holiday sales (30%)

 

The gifts that U.S. consumers are looking to buy this holiday season include:

 

  • Fashion (30%)
  • Gift cards (295%)
  • Beauty/personal care products (29%)
  • Footwear (28%)
  • 28% Electronic products (28%)
  • Toys (26%)
  • Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) or Digital Collectibles (20%)

 

Consumers expect holiday gifts to arrive on time

 

Home delivery (56%) is the most common delivery method, compared to curbside (21%) or in-store pickup (16%)

47% would order from a retailer that delivers faster

62% are willing to pay more for expedited/guaranteed delivery

61% would consider booking a third-party delivery/pickup service to receive their goods on time

 

Holiday shoppers are heavily focused on social media

 

Consumers mainly look for products and offers on social media (21%), with the most popular being Facebook (26%), Instagram (25%), YouTube (15%) and TikTok (14%). Among them, Generation Z (18-24 years old) prefers Instagram (33%) and TikTok (22%).

 

Some people also use email (19%), in-store promotions (21%) and other methods to find products and offers, while less than 1% use the Metaverse to discover new products.

 

Other findings from the survey include:

 

48% prefer to return items in-store, while 29% prefer to return items online.

43% shop primarily in-store, and 23% plan to shop both in-store and online

29% of people are worried about product out-of-stock

22% of people are unwilling to wait for the merchant to add inventory and will go directly to another store to shop.
