According to a survey of 2,179 online shoppers by Finder, about 17% of Americans shop while drunk. In the past year, Americans spent $14 billion on drunk shopping. On average, each person spent $309.

Compared with the previous year, Americans' spending on drunk shopping has decreased significantly this year. Due to the epidemic, people stayed at home longer, and Americans spent $21.6 billion on drunk shopping in 2021. In 2020, when the epidemic broke out on a large scale, this figure reached a record high of $44.9 billion.

The survey found that men (26%) were more likely to shop while intoxicated than women (10%). The top category for intoxicated shopping for men was food (47%), while for women (50%) it was shoes, clothing or accessories.

Other purchase categories for men were: shoes, clothing or accessories (46%), gambling (43%) and cigarettes (42%). Other purchase categories for women were: food (15%), alcohol (8%), cigarettes (5%) and pets, music and gambling (4% each).

By demographic, Millennials (33%) are most likely to shop while intoxicated, followed by Gen Z (28%), Gen X (8%) and Baby Boomers (2%).

Food is the top purchase category for Baby Boomers at 45%, alcohol is the top purchase category for Generation X at 45%, and shoes, clothing or accessories are the most commonly purchased items for Millennials (52%) and Generation Z (44%).

The study also found that by region, people on the West Coast of the United States (20%) were most likely to shop while intoxicated, while people in the Midwest (15%) were least likely.

On the other hand, looking at income differences, those earning more than $100,000 a year were almost twice as likely (26%) to have gone on a shopping spree while intoxicated as those earning less than $100,000 a year (15%).
