Americans' summer fashion shopping trends: hot styles and categories

It is learned that recently, the research organization LTK released the 2023 US Summer Fashion Trend Report, revealing the most popular fashion categories and styles among American consumers.

According to the report, 75% of American Generation Z consumers buy products based on creators' recommendations, and women mainly look for shopping inspiration from TikTok. Among Generation Z and millennials, fresh girl aesthetics and floral styles are the most popular, and wide-leg jeans, denim skirts, and Crocs sandals are the most popular fashion categories.

The report shows that 81% of American Generation Z women say fashion plays an important role in their happiness. Generation Z is also the generation that considers itself the most fashionable, a proportion twice as high as other groups.

When it comes to shopping inspiration, in addition to recommendations from friends, 41% of Generation Z shoppers prefer TikTok as a source of fashion inspiration, while 29% of millennials prefer Instagram, with creators also playing an important role.

Popular Styles

In terms of style preferences in the fashion category, the report pointed out that the fresh girl aesthetic became the most popular style in the summer of 2023. This relaxed, minimalist and elegant style became the first choice of Generation Z and Millennials across the United States.

Floral prints were the second most popular style, and when it came to other trends, Gen Z was leaning more towards goth and grunge styles rather than the Barbie style that has been popular over the past year.

But overall, female consumers of all ages want to try more bold styles. Among Generation Z consumers, 72% said they like to try and buy new clothing trends, compared to 66% of Millennials and 58% of Generation X.

Style preferences also vary by region, with women in the Northeast and South favoring more personalized styles and women in the Midwest preferring a more laid-back, casual style. Neutral tones such as black and gray are popular in every region, except in the South, where Barbie style ranks in the top six fashion styles.

Popular categories

In terms of the choice of fashion items, the report pointed out that some previously eliminated fashion categories have re-emerged. According to Generation Z and Millennials, skinny jeans are out of fashion, and wide-leg jeans are the most popular fashion item in summer.

Denim skirts have made a strong comeback among all age groups, with nearly half of Generation Z listing denim skirts as a must-have item for summer wear. On the LTK platform, searches for denim skirts have increased significantly, with a growth rate of 72%.

In addition, light and flowing summer dresses and maxi skirts are the preferred styles for summer. Unlike traditional bright colors, Generation Z prefers neutral tones, with 70% saying that the colors they wear most often this season are white and beige.

When it comes to footwear, 40% of Gen Z women say they plan to wear Crocs this summer. In the past month alone, searches for Crocs on the LTK platform have increased by more than 50%.

According to the report, most consumers in each region have a shopping budget of approximately $100 to $250 for summer fashion categories. The survey for LTK’s 2023 Summer Style Trend Report was conducted in May 2023 with a total of 1,044 participants.
