It is learned that Temu commissioned Propeller Insights to conduct a survey in December 2023. Temu asked more than 1,000 American adults aged between 18 and 65 to reveal Americans' consumption trends and purchasing preferences, as well as the most popular e-commerce platforms in the United States. The survey showed that American consumers prefer e-commerce platforms rather than brands’ own websites. The survey also showed that price, quality and delivery speed are important considerations for consumers when shopping. Important factors affecting American consumers' online shopping decisions According to Temu's survey, nearly two-thirds of respondents (63.9%) said that price is the primary factor affecting their shopping. In addition to price, product quality and delivery speed are also important factors affecting consumers' purchasing decisions. Brand reputation, online security and sustainable development have lower influence. 78.4% of respondents said they compare prices online before buying a product. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of respondents believe they can get better deals online than in stores, and therefore prefer online shopping. The most popular e-commerce platform among American consumers The survey shows that e-commerce platforms are more popular than brands' own websites. In the 2023 holiday season, more than a quarter (25.7%) of respondents shopped on e-commerce platforms. In contrast, one in five (20%) shopped directly on the brand's own website. It is worth noting that more than three-quarters of the respondents (75.2%) know how to identify which e-commerce websites are safe and trustworthy. Among them, nearly three-quarters said that they read customer reviews to help determine which e-commerce websites are trustworthy. The rise of social media platforms The survey found that social media also has an important influence on consumers' choice of online shopping sites. In the United States, people of all ages mainly know Temu through social media. However, Americans make purchases primarily out of personal interest rather than being inspired by what they see on social media. 53.4% of respondents said they would not buy something without being influenced by others, and 53.9% said they would still buy something even if the content creator advised against it. The survey shows that the e-commerce platforms currently favored by American consumers include Amazon, Target and eBay. According to third-party GMV calculations, Amazon ranks first in the Digital Commerce 360 ranking of the top 1,000 leading online retailers in North America. Target ranks fifth, while eBay ranks sixth. Most and Least Popular Shopping Categories According to Temu Online Shopping Survey, the top three categories in terms of sales in 2023 are Clothing and accessories Home Furnishings Consumer Electronics During the same period, the least popular categories were sports and outdoor equipment and pet supplies.
