Net 1 Closing Review! Amazon Official Data Release

Cyber Monday has ended this afternoon, and the Black Friday Cyber Monday boom for cross-border sellers has come to an end. This year, many small and medium-sized sellers reported that their traffic was taken away by big sellers during Black Friday. So what about Cyber Monday, which started yesterday afternoon?

First, the total volume of the US site. According to current news from foreign media, although Amazon held a grand Prime Day a month ago, which had a huge siphoning effect on the current Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the upgraded performance of Cyber Monday still showed strong growth. Major retailers are looking for opportunities during Black Friday and Cyber Monday to release more attractive discounts and products to make up for the performance lost during the epidemic.

Data analysis agencies believe that with the closure of offline stores due to the epidemic, the total online sales on Cyber Monday this year may be around US$10.8 billion to US$11.4 billion, and Amazon may account for nearly 60% of it.

Amazon Global Store also released official data at 5 pm today. During Black Friday Cyber Monday, the sales of third-party sellers on Amazon worldwide exceeded 4.8 billion US dollars, an increase of more than 60% year-on-year! It set a record for the sales of third-party sellers on Black Friday Cyber Monday. During Black Friday Cyber Monday, 71,000 small and medium-sized enterprises around the world achieved sales of more than 100,000 US dollars!

Current data shows that the most popular shopping trends on the US site during this Black Friday online shopping season are personal care and home products, with beauty, fashion and home furnishings being the three most popular categories on the sales list. Sports, pets and toys are also very popular categories.

In comparison, the official third-party seller sales during Prime Day this year were $3.5 billion (also a 60% year-on-year increase). Considering that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are slightly longer than Prime Day, the effects of the two major promotional festivals should be similar, and both are very successful based on official data.

Analysts also believe that this performance will not come to an abrupt end after the end of Cyber Monday. The US government may also determine a new round of economic stimulus plan in December. It is expected that e-commerce sales will continue to maintain a high level from the end of Cyber Monday to Christmas Eve.

It is worth mentioning that Amazon often experienced page crashes during previous big promotional holidays. However, the Amazon website was very stable during Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year. It is estimated that this was because the AWS maintenance during the upheaval the day before Black Friday played a big role.

No matter what, Amazon must have made a lot of money from this wave, and some top sellers must have also reaped the benefits. So what is the real situation of third-party small and medium-sized sellers?

The situation of small and medium-sized sellers

Data released by Amazon showed that 71,000 sellers had sales of more than $100,000 during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a number significantly higher than any other period on Amazon.

It was this wave of sellers that swept up all the traffic on the Amazon platform during this promotion, and Amazon also did not announce the sales of its own brands this time. We analyzed it during the last Prime Day. The reason why Amazon did not publicize the sales of its own platform but singled out third-party sellers was nothing more than to establish an image of "friend of small businesses" for itself, on the one hand to reduce the pressure of public opinion, and on the other hand to hold sellers hostage to fight against antitrust agencies.

With this logic, we can understand that the actual sales growth of self-operated stores is likely to be the same as or even higher than that of third-party stores. This is also the reason why many small and medium-sized sellers have been complaining about the lack of orders and traffic being snatched away during Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year. Most of the traffic and orders were intercepted by self-operated stores and top sellers, and the Prime exclusive free activities were not very effective. Small and medium-sized sellers can only fall into the dilemma of having less traffic during a big promotion.

This situation can only be improved by separating the self-operated products. Amazon has a preference for and supports self-operated products, and Amazon also uses the sales data of third-party sellers to develop new products for self-operated products, causing unfair competition for sellers. Without self-operated products, third-party sellers will lose a huge (potential) competitor.

To sum up, this year's Cyber Monday did have good traffic and orders, but most of them were eaten up by self-operated and top sellers. Small and medium-sized sellers, especially those who were not well prepared and had only one promotional method (only exclusive ones), were easily trapped, and their traffic and orders were even less than usual.

The sales data of these two days are enough for major data organizations to analyze for a period of time. The results of this analysis may also affect our product selection and operation direction in the post-epidemic era next year. I will collect some data later and give you an in-depth analysis of the sales data of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
