36% of Americans use "buy now, pay later" when shopping online during the holidays! The average amount owed is $1,249!

LendingTree conducted a survey of more than 2,000 Americans to explore their "buy now, pay later" consumption. The data showed that 36% of American consumers used "buy now, pay later" online shopping during the 2021 holiday shopping season, with an average debt of $1,249.

As online shopping becomes more and more popular, the "buy now, pay later" payment method is becoming more and more popular in the United States. Studies have shown that installment payments may stimulate consumer consumption, but the amount owed for advance consumption may exceed their ability to pay. For example, 62% of Americans choose to "buy now, pay later" with credit cards, but 82% of vacation debtors will not pay off within a month, although the interest charges are high, with an average interest rate of more than 16%.

It is learned that according to another forecast by TransUnion, by the end of the holiday sales season, Americans' online shopping sales using credit cards will exceed the $70 billion mark. As consumers continue to increase their spending, this figure is expected to increase to $805.7 billion by 2022. This shows that Americans' pre-consumption purchasing power should not be underestimated.
