Spartannash Company (formerly Spartan Stores, Inc.) is a multi-regional grocery distributor and retailer in the United States and a military grocery food distributor. The Company operates through three business segments. The Military segment sells and distributes grocery food products to military stores and exchanges in the United States and overseas. The Food Distribution segment distributes grocery products primarily to independent and company-owned retail stores using a multi-platform sales approach. The Retail segment operates primarily retail supermarkets. The Company distributes products to more than 170 military stores and more than 440 exchanges. These military stores and exchanges are located in more than 40 states in the United States. Department compositionSpartanNash operates in three segments: Food Dtribution, Military and Retail. 1. Food Dtribution provides approximately 60,000 SKUs such as dry goods, agricultural products, dairy products, meats, prepared foods, baked goods, frozen foods, seafood, floral products, general merchandise, beverages, tobacco products, health and beauty care and pharmaceutical products to independent retailers, national retailers, food service distributors, e-commerce providers and corporate-owned retail stores. The division also provides various value-added services to retailers. Military sells and distributes grocery products to military commissions and exchanges in all 50 states, including the United States and the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Bahrain, Djibouti, and Egypt. 3. Retail mainly operates neighborhood supermarkets. As of December 29, 2018, the division operates 145 self-owned retail stores in the Midwest of the United States, including Family Fresh Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market, VG's Grocery, Dan's Supermarket and Family Fresh market. SpartanNash also provides pharmacy services in 82 of the stores and fuel services (refueling) in 29 of the stores. Development HistoryGrand Rapids Wholesale Grocery Company was founded in 1917 and renamed Spartan Stores in 1957. For most of its history, Spartan was a cooperative. Spartan became a stock corporation in the 1970s and first traded on the NASDAQ in August 2000. D& W Food Centers began using Spartan as a supplier in 1961, and soon after, Spartan and D&W Private label products. In 2000, D&W switched to Supervalu. In 2000, Spartan Stores acquired Seaway Foodtown, which included 47 food city supermarkets. By 2003, the company had ceased operations in Foodtown. In 2005, Spartan was expected to acquire the Farmer Jack chain, but did not think Farmer Jack would be a good deal. In March 2006, the company agreed to acquire D&W Food Centers, Inc. In 2007, Spartan acquired the Felpausch chain, which consisted of 20 stores, nine of which had in-house pharmacies, three convenience stores and two fuel centers. In April 2008, Spartan announced that 12 of the 14 Pharm stores and the customer list would be sold to Rite Aid. The two Michigan stores were to be sold in separate transactions. In October 2008, Spartan announced that it would acquire VGs Grocery and Pharmacy stores in Michigan. In February 2011, the last Felpausch in Coldwater was converted to the Family Fare name. Thirteen Glen's Markets in northern Michigan began converting to the Family Fare name in May 2013. Three new Valu Land stores also opened in 2013. In 2013, Spartan Stores and INash Finch Company merged to form Spartan Nash Company. The official name change took place in May 2014 while continuing to operate in its previous markets as Spartan Stores, Nash Finch and MDV. On January 9, 2017, Spartan Nash completed the acquisition of Catio Foods and Blue Ribbon Transport (BRT). In March 2017, SpartanNash announced that David Staples would replace Dennis Edison as CEO of Spartan Nash. Edison continued to serve as chairman of the company's board of directors after retiring as CEO in late May. On June 15, 2018, the company announced that it would close the Fergus Falls Sun Mart on July 14. On December 31, 2018, Spartan Nash completed the acquisition of MartinsSuper Markets in South Bend, Indiana. In October 2020, Amazon announced that it had agreed to acquire a 15% stake in food distributor SpartanNash. References |
