It is learned that Amazon's recently launched palm print payment system "Amazon One" has attracted strong attention from US senators. In a letter to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, three US bipartisan senators expressed privacy and competition concerns about the system and asked the company to provide information on how to ensure the security of user data.
Amazon One allows consumers to pay for items by swiping their palm prints. Amazon piloted the technology at two cashier-less Amazon Go stores in South Lake Union last fall. It has since expanded to 59 Whole Foods and other Amazon stores across the country.
News reports last week that Amazon had begun offering $10 shopping credits to people who sign up for the service raised new concerns about the technology's impact on privacy following reports that Amazon had previously exposed user data in a hack.
It is understood that the senators stated in the letter that in addition to raising user privacy and security issues, Amazon may also use this data to further consolidate its competitiveness and suppress competition in various markets.
The senators asked Amazon to provide information on data collection and licensing of the technology to third parties by August 26. Amazon declined to comment on the senators' letter. The company has previously said the technology is highly secure.
