Amazon and Facebook ask the US government for permission to operate undersea cables

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, Facebook and Amazon recently asked the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to approve the operation of a new submarine data cable between the Philippines and California.

They plan to start commercial operations by the end of 2022 and say the new cable will help support Facebook's applications and provide capacity for Amazon and its affiliates to support Amazon's cloud services and connect its data centers.

Previously, Google announced its open submarine cable Firmina, which will run from the East Coast of the United States to Las Toninas in Argentina. The network currently has about 300 submarine cables, carrying 99% of the world's data traffic. In addition, Google is building two other submarine Internet cable systems to increase network capacity between the Middle East, Southern Europe and Asia.

Facebook and Amazon were supposed to be working with China Mobile to develop an undersea data cable from San Francisco to Hong Kong. But in 2019, the FCC voted to deny China Mobile the right to provide service to U.S. users, citing espionage risks.

In April 2020, the FCC approved Google's request to use part of an undersea telecommunications cable between Asia (excluding Hong Kong) and the United States. The cable currently runs between Taiwan and the United States.

In March 2021, Facebook withdrew from another request, which involved cables between Hong Kong and California (USA).
