The ATO is responsible for administering Australia's federal tax system, superannuation legislation and other related matters. The ATO is run by the Australian Treasurer.

Responsibilities

As the Australian Government's main tax collection agency, the ATO collects income tax, goods and services tax (GST) and other federal taxes.

The ATO is also responsible for managing the Australian Business Register, delivering higher education loan programs, delivering many Australian Government payments and administering key components of Australia’s superannuation system.
