According to Chicory's third annual online grocery survey, more than 35% of U.S. consumers ranked Walmart as their most frequently shopped online grocery retailer. E-commerce giant Amazon ranked second, with about 23% of consumers listing it as their preferred grocery retailer.
Instacart ranked third (10%). Considering that the platform has no physical stores and focuses only on grocery delivery, it is a very impressive achievement for Instacart to be among the top three under a single operating model.
Amazon is the preferred platform for people over 60 years old. Walmart has the greatest appeal among people aged 45 to 60, and traditional supermarket chain Kroger also has a considerable share of the audience in this age group. At the same time, Instacart is most popular among the 18-29 age group.
Data shows that in January 2022, 52% of people ordered online groceries at least once a week, of which 10% placed orders more than once a week, and about 14% would shop on special holidays.
Half of the respondents to the Chicory survey said they typically spend $50 to $100 on online grocery shopping, with nearly 60% making purchases at least once a week. 35% of consumers spend more than $100 on average, up nearly 16% from 2021.
