Empty containers are piling up in the U.S., prices are plummeting! They will continue to fall in the coming months

According to data from Container xChange, container prices in the United States have fallen sharply in recent months and will fall further in the future.

In Los Angeles, a 40-foot HC container fell from $3,467 in late February 2022 to $2,754 in April 2022, while a 20-foot DC container averaged $1,661 in April 2022, down from a high of $3,080 in late August 2021, the company’s analysis shows.

Christian Roeloffs, co-founder and CEO of Container xChange, said: "Generally speaking, the epidemic and supply chain disruptions will lead to an increase in container prices, especially the prices of second-hand containers. However, in the United States, due to the extremely unstable supply chain in the past two years, and the recent worsening of the epidemic in China and the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, a large number of containers could not be shipped back to Asia, so empty containers piled up and prices fell sharply."

Roeloffs expects prices to continue to fall as warehouses overflow and container owners rush to sell. The impact of the Chinese epidemic may have eased the backlog of ships and cargo on the east and west coasts of the United States, but as the epidemic in China eases in the future, it will further increase supply chain pressure and aggravate the deadlock in the United States.
