Adobe's latest data: Americans' online shopping spending has reached $1.7 trillion since the outbreak

It is learned that on March 15, Adobe announced at the opening ceremony of its Adobe Summit that US consumers spent 1.7 trillion US dollars online from March 2020 to February 2022.

This figure includes the $32 billion that U.S. consumers paid for the same goods at higher prices in the context of recent inflation. In 2021, U.S. consumers spent $885 billion on online shopping, an increase of 8.9% year-on-year.

According to Adobe's announcement, statistics two years after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic are nearly $610 billion more than the total e-commerce sales from March 2018 to February 2020. Adobe also said that it expects online shopping spending in the United States to exceed $1 trillion for the first time in 2022.

Online inflation has risen for 21 consecutive months, and $22 billion of U.S. e-commerce growth in 2021 is related to price increases. About $3.8 billion of e-commerce growth in 2022 is attributed to price increases. In the first two months of this year, U.S. consumers' online shopping spending increased by 13.8% year-on-year to $138 billion.

According to a report by Adobe, due to continued inflation, consumers may need to pay $27 billion more in 2022 to buy the same amount of goods online.

In 2021, 41.8% of total U.S. e-commerce spending came from groceries, electronics, and apparel, of which groceries accounted for 8.9%, reaching $79.2 billion, up from $73.7 billion in 2020 and more than double online grocery spending in 2019. Adobe expects this figure to exceed $85 billion this year.

Data shows that U.S. consumers spend an average of $6.7 billion per month on groceries, up from $3.1 billion before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, in 2021, online consumer spending on electronic products in the United States reached $165 billion, accounting for 18.6% of total spending, an increase of 8% from 2020 ($152.7 billion). It is expected to reach $174 billion this year.

Online apparel sales in the United States increased from $115.8 billion in 2020 to $126.2 billion in 2021, an increase of 8% year-on-year. Adobe expects the industry to exceed $130 billion this year.

“Online grocery shopping is reshaping the U.S. e-commerce market, a category with the least discounts compared to traditional categories like electronics and apparel,” said Steve Jobs, vice president of growth marketing and insights at Adobe, in a company press release. “It highlights the shift to a digital economy where speed and convenience have become as important as cost savings.”
