Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will no longer sell its talcum powder baby powder worldwide starting in 2023. This is because over the past few decades, Johnson & Johnson has received 38,000 lawsuits from consumers and their survivors. The lawsuits claim that talcum powder contains asbestos, a dangerous carcinogen. It is reported that Johnson & Johnson has been selling talcum powder baby powder since 1894 and positioned it as a maternal and infant product. Studies have shown that long-term use of asbestos products increases the risk of cancer. Most of the lawsuits against the company were filed by women with ovarian cancer or their relatives. In response to these lawsuits, the relevant US courts ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay more than $2 billion to 22 women. Johnson & Johnson said asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer, but there is controversy over whether the substance causes ovarian cancer. Despite this, the company still "strongly stands by" its view that its talc products are safe, do not cause cancer and do not contain asbestos. But Johnson & Johnson lost the lawsuit involving its talc causing ovarian cancer. In view of this, Johnson & Johnson said it will transition to selling only corn starch-based baby powder. According to Bloomberg, about 75% of American baby powder customers buy corn starch baby powder, while only 25% of consumers buy talcum powder baby powder. This consumption trend is completely opposite in countries outside the United States. It is learned that in 2020, due to a series of lawsuits, Johnson & Johnson stopped selling talc baby powder in the United States and Canada. A Johnson & Johnson spokesperson pointed out that sales of the product in these countries have declined due to "the spread of incorrect information about the safety of the product."
