According to a new survey of 3,025 Canadians by Yahoo Canada and Maru Public Opinion, among the 67% of Canadians who are more likely to shop online, the oldest Canadians (over 55 years old) lead the way at 79%, followed by middle-aged people (35-54 years old at 69%) and young people (18 years old) at 34.5%. Compared with men (65%), female consumers (70%) said they would be more likely to shop online during the holiday shopping season. Young Canadians (18-34 years old, 45%) are the most likely to shop online, followed by middle-aged Canadians (35-54 years old, 33%) and the oldest Canadians (55 years old and above, 17%). Maru Public Opinion said: "Although more and more consumers are choosing online shopping, Canadians are also spending cautiously as the cost of living rises. At the same time, because middle-aged and elderly people are afraid of contracting the new coronavirus in crowded places, they have also greatly reduced the frequency of going to shopping malls or physical stores, and have shifted the main place of consumption to the Internet." The youngest Canadians (18-34 years old at 50%) are most likely to shop in stores now (33%) compared to before the pandemic, followed by middle-aged adults (35-54 years old at 31%) and older adults (55+ at 31%), while men (35%) are also more likely to shop in-store than women (30%). While a large portion of Canadian shoppers say they are less likely to shop in-store, and retailers are moving to an omnichannel approach to accommodate this trend, 65% of respondents still prefer physical stores over online shopping. 65% of Canadians say they would prefer to shop in-store rather than online if they had the choice. It is learned that a recent report from NPD Group found that 43% of consumers surveyed said that people are more cautious about spending compared to 2021, and spending will decrease during the 2022 holiday shopping season.
