Walmart plans to close three of its technology centers in the United States and ask hundreds of employees to relocate to save their jobs, according to foreign media reports. At the same time, the retailer will also begin requiring all technical employees to work in the office at least two days a week. Walmart's global chief technology officer, Suresh Kumar, announced plans to cut its technology infrastructure in a memo to employees last week, saying it would close technology offices in Austin, Texas; Carlsbad, California; and Portland, Oregon. Walmart will pay for employees in these locations to transfer to other major offices, such as San Bruno, California, or the company's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Employees who resign due to the decision will receive severance pay, the memo shows. In addition, Walmart has introduced a new policy that employees can choose to work from home, but they can work in the office at least two days a week. "We have made the decision to centralize our technology teams within select locations. We expect to relocate or allow all impacted employees to work remotely," a Walmart spokesperson said. It is learned that the Global Technology Department was once Walmart's fastest-growing corporate team. The technologies developed and managed by this department include cloud computing, data, enterprise architecture, development operations, infrastructure and security, as well as providing enterprise services to other Walmart employees. As of March 2022, Walmart employed approximately 20,000 technical workers. In March 2022, Walmart's global technology division said it would open new centers in Toronto and Atlanta, and also planned to hire more than 5,000 technology employees in fiscal 2022. It is unclear whether the decision to close the three centers will affect Walmart's plans to open the Toronto and Atlanta centers or hire new personnel. It is worth noting that after the closure, Walmart will operate 8 technology centers in the United States, located in San Bruno, California, Seattle, northwest Arkansas and Dallas. In addition, Walmart also operates 6 technology centers outside the United States. Editor ✎ Nicole/ Disclaimer: This article is copyrighted and may not be reproduced without permission. |
