TikTok is the new favorite among American teenagers, and Amazon's e-commerce position is unmatched

It is learned that according to the "Spring 2023 Teen Assessment" survey by US investment bank Piper Sandler, although TikTok's popularity has dropped by 1 percentage point from the fall of 2022, it is still the favorite social media platform for teenagers. Piper Sandler also investigated teenagers' spending power, shopping preferences, and more.

Currently, TikTok ranks first with 37% support among teenagers, followed by Snapchat (27%) and Instagram (23%). TikTok has been the most popular social media app since it replaced Snapchat in the spring of 2022.

Piper Sandler highlighted that teens' favorable views of TikTok have declined slightly compared to last fall, likely due to growing concerns about data privacy and continued federal government scrutiny of the app.

The survey also found that Amazon is the top shopping site for teens (57%), followed by Nike (6%), Shein (6%), Lululemon (3%) and Pacsun.

In terms of spending priorities, clothing (33%) and footwear (61%) are the top choices for teens, with males preferring to buy food (24%) and females preferring clothing (28%).

In other tech findings, teens are using virtual reality devices the same amount of time per week compared to fall 2022. Currently, 29% of teens own a VR device.

In the spring of 2023, the average total spending of teenagers was $2,419, a year-on-year increase of 2%, among which the spending of high-income teenage males increased by 6% year-on-year and the spending of teenage females increased by 1% year-on-year.

Piper Sandler also found that teens are showing an increased preference for discounted and second-hand items. As inflation continues to rise, younger consumers are increasingly turning to sustainable shopping methods.

Additionally, teens continue to show strong concerns about social causes and the environment. This year, environmental issues were the top area of concern at 19%, followed by racial equality (9%), abortion and inflation (6% each), and the Willow Project (4%).
