Wayfair to close Kentucky warehouse, plans to lay off 218 employees

It is learned that on October 16, American home furnishing e-commerce giant Wayfai announced that it would close its warehouse in Florence, Kentucky, USA.

The 20,000-square-foot facility at 5101 Renegade Way in Florence opened five years ago and was used as a warehouse and retail store. Wayfair has filed a layoff notice, which is expected to affect 218 employees. The layoffs will begin on December 31 this year and will continue in phases until 2025.

Wayfair spokesperson Tara Lambropoulos said in a statement that the company will provide support to affected employees and help them find alternative jobs at other Wayfair factories or through local employment agencies. In January this year, Wayfair announced that it would lay off approximately 1,650 employees worldwide, accounting for 13% of its total workforce. This measure is expected to save it more than $280 million in costs each year.

The closures and layoffs are the latest steps Wayfair has taken to optimize operations and control costs. In its latest earnings report, Wayfair reported second-quarter revenue of $3.1 billion, down 1.7% year-over-year. As consumers remain cautious about spending on home furnishings, credit card data shows that the consumption trend in the home furnishing category is similar to the decline during the 2008 financial crisis.
