The number of online shoppers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States dropped to 124 million, with clothing being the most popular category

According to data released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics, the number of consumers during the five-day shopping season from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday this year exceeded initial expectations. Although the overall retail industry continues to change, the shopping boom on Black Friday and Cyber Monday remains strong, especially in e-commerce.

An estimated 197 million consumers participated in holiday shopping this year, down from 200 million in 2023 but higher than the initial forecast of 183 million. Although the number of online shoppers declined, 124 million people still shopped online, down from 134 million last year.

In terms of Black Friday shopping performance, the number of online shoppers dropped from 90.6 million in 2023 to 87.3 million. Despite this, Cyber Monday is still the largest online shopping day, but the trend of consumers turning to mobile devices for shopping is becoming more and more obvious. Data shows that 63% of online shoppers used mobile devices to make purchases on Cyber Monday this year, a significant increase from 55% in 2023, setting a record high.

The survey shows that the average spending of shoppers during the Black Friday weekend was $235, an increase of $8 from last year. Clothing, toys and gift cards became the most popular shopping items, with about 49% of respondents buying clothing and accessories as holiday gifts, 31% buying toys, and 27% choosing gift cards. This trend reflects consumers' enthusiasm for consumption and gift-giving during the holiday shopping period.

Although the performance of Black Friday and Cyber Monday has fluctuated, consumer spending will continue to grow during the holiday shopping season, with retail sales expected to increase by 2.5% to 3.5% from November to December, and total retail sales expected to reach US$979.5 billion to US$989 billion.
