Amazon US site backend starts to require tax ID?

Sellers on the US site were previously scared by the tax, but it was finally confirmed that it was just a routine notification from Amazon before providing seller information to the California government.

An analysis of the US taxation controversy

Today, Alice received inquiries from students one after another, and the backend sent them emails with complete tax information. The content of the email was completely different from the previous one, which once again made the sellers on the US site nervous.

Is it true that this time, as some service providers said, if you don’t provide a US tax number, your store will be closed?! Or have the sellers been exploited for a sense of crisis again?

Since many sellers have not received this email, let’s first look at the original text of the email.

Students who can't see clearly can also look at the content of the email I posted below.

Hello from Amazon,

Your Form W-8BEN on file with Amazon will expire on December 31, 2018. To maintain your selling privileges, please complete an updated tax interview no later than December 31, 2018. Failure to comply by this date will result in the suspension of your selling privileges.

To complete the tax interview, have your primary user complete the following in Seller Central.

Update your Tax information in the US Tax Identity Information Interview sections (https://sellercentral.amazon.com/hz/sc/account-information):

1. Under Business information, click Legal Entity.

2. Click Update Tax Information.

3. Complete the Tax Identity Interview section.

4. Consent to electronic signature to immediately submit your tax information.

Best regards,

Amazon

The content of the email is simple and clear, reminding sellers that the W-8BEN form is about to expire and they need to reapply before December 31. If the reapplication is not completed before the deadline, the store's sales rights will be removed.

This W-8BEN form may be unfamiliar to everyone.

This is a U.S. Internal Revenue Service form used to declare that the person filing the form is a non-U.S. citizen and to request exemption from U.S. taxes .

▲Amazon's official terms and conditions

Although many sellers don't remember, they have almost filled it out when they opened a store. W-8BEN has an expiration date, and sellers will be reminded to resubmit it when it expires.

I think everyone knows whether this email means that the United States has started to collect taxes. In fact, even if you have no impression of W-8BEN, you can get a clue from the last sentence of the email.

Important: Information in this document does not constitute tax, legal, or other professional advice.

Amazon has stated that this email is not equivalent to tax, legal or other professional advice. It is just a reminder for sellers whose W-8BEN has expired to update the form as soon as possible. Therefore, sellers who received the email, click the link in the email to jump to the page to fill in the application (sellers who were scared by the phishing emails some time ago can also check the email in the background and click to jump)

I will briefly tell you how to fill in the content.

1. Choose a person or a business

Except for personal accounts and limited liability companies whose owner is one person, business information must be filled in for all other situations.

2. Are you an American?

Please note that you must fill in "No"

W-8BEN is for non-US citizens. US citizens are required to fill out Form W-9 and submit their US tax ID number .

The rest of the company name, address, and legal person information can be filled in and submitted truthfully. Be sure to complete the submission before the specified deadline, because removing the sales rights is no joke.

As for the sellers who did not receive the email, this incident also serves as a warning to you. If you receive tax emails related to W-8BEN in the future, you will know what to do. If you see similar news again, you must learn to analyze it calmly, find the source of the news, and don't be easily led astray by the media or service providers.
