Amazon is mass-producing face masks

Amazon is reportedly using engineering tools and expertise borrowed from its drone division to mass-produce face shields for health care workers, the latest reorganization of its resources to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Amazon said it would sell the masks on its website at cost starting in the "coming weeks," with specific prices to be announced separately. The masks are being made at Amazon's drone engineering facility in Washington state and by contract manufacturers elsewhere. Amazon did not say how many masks it plans to make.

Amazon executives call for federal price-gouging law

According to foreign media reports, an Amazon executive called on Congress to enact federal price gouging laws so that the United States can more effectively combat the unfair pricing practices of masks and disinfectants seen on Amazon's website during the epidemic.

Brian Huseman, Amazon's vice president of public policy, said the company "stands ready" to work with officials on comprehensive price gouging legislation that would help "protect consumers" from bad actors seeking to profit from the coronavirus outbreak and any other future national crises. Currently, about two-thirds of states have price gouging laws.

Huseman also said that while each state is unique and has the ability to enact separate legislation to pry open incentives and remedies for price gouging, a federal price gouging law will ensure there are no gaps in consumer protection. It will also help retailers like Amazon more effectively prevent bad behavior and ensure fair prices.
