Search volume for “cancel Amazon Prime” surges 18 times

The annual Amazon Prime Day promotion has ended. This year's Prime Day is the longest promotion since its launch, starting on July 15 and lasting 48 hours.

Coresight Research expects Amazon Prime Day sales to reach $ 5.8 billion .

Internet Retailer predicts that Prime Day sales this year will grow 46.5% to $6.14 billion.

Data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that the average Prime member spends $1,400 on Amazon each year, more than double the $600 spent by non-Prime members.

The agency estimates that as of the end of June, Amazon had 105 million Prime members in the United States, up from 95 million in June 2018.

However, according to data from search research firm Captify, on the first day of the promotion, online searches for " Canceling Amazon Prime " skyrocketed, with the number of searches increasing 18 times compared to the previous day.

Explanation of the skyrocketing data:

Although consumers are keen to buy promotional products,

But I have no regrets about being a long-term Prime member.

"If Amazon wants to use Prime Day as a way to entice users to sign up for Prime membership, it may need to reevaluate its retention strategy," Captiy said. "Search data shows that consumers are willing to sign up for Prime membership to get promotional discounts, but then cancel it quickly."

Captify counts search data from computers, voice devices and mobile phones of 2.2 billion users worldwide. Rohaan Dullabhai, a senior analyst at the agency, said search data from forums such as Reddit and discount websites were also counted.

Searches for Best Buy increased 255% the day before Prime Day, searches for Walmart increased 130%, and searches for eBay increased 72%.

This shows that consumers will compare promotions on various websites before subscribing to Amazon Prime.

“Consumers are becoming more savvy,” Dullabhai said, “knowing how to use forums and competition between retailers to find the best deals.”

Amazon started hosting Prime Day in 2015. This year, Prime Day was held in 18 countries , including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and Australia .

Analysts say Amazon Prime membership retention rate will exceed 90%, higher than retailer Costco.

In order to attract more users to sign up for Prime membership, Amazon has continuously introduced various strategies, such as increasing the content available to Prime members and providing a monthly membership system.
