Another freight forwarder was arrested for a financial scandal! The loss was as high as 425 million yuan
Since the beginning of this year, logistics chaos has occurred frequently, and logistics companies have collapsed one after another.

Now is the time when logistics review is being tightened across the board. Amazon has implemented new logistics service management rules, and well-known logistics companies such as UPS and USPS have strengthened their regulatory policies. Even so, there are still many people who take advantage of the situation and choose to "go against the wind" under high pressure, trying to "seek wealth and honor in danger."

The amount is as high as 425 million, another freight forwarder went bankrupt

It is learned that according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a Chinese citizen named Chen who lives in Walnut, USA, was arrested on federal charges on the afternoon of May 25. He was federally accused of using fake postage to deliver millions of packages, which caused USPS to suffer huge losses for six months. The losses are estimated to exceed 60 million US dollars (about 425 million RMB) .

Fake postage is also known as "fake postage." According to the USPS, this is any mark or marking made, printed, or otherwise created without the authorization of the Postal Service , printed or applied or otherwise affixed to items in the mail that indicates or represents that valid postage has been paid to mail the items. Using fake postage is a criminal offense.

It is understood that Chen, who was arrested by the US police, was running a business that provided transportation and mailing services to companies, including e-commerce suppliers operating outside of China. In short, this is actually a freight forwarding logistics company. Multiple investigations conducted by USPS and US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) staff have shown that most of the postage used by Chen and her company to ship goods within the United States is fake .

The prosecutor pointed out that the QR code on Chen's company's mailing slip did not match the actual mailing information.

Currently, Chen is facing two criminal charges of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and possession and use of counterfeit postage . If convicted of both charges, she faces up to 10 years in prison .

In addition to this freight forwarder default case, many sellers have been suffering from freight forwarder defaults recently, and are always worried that they will accidentally step on a landmine. It is recommended that sellers consider the following aspects when choosing a logistics provider:

  • Check the business license of the logistics provider to confirm whether there are any risks;

  • Conduct on-site inspections of logistics providers;

  • Price is not the only determining factor. We should also consider timeliness, freight, risk management capabilities, industry reputation, and other factors.

  • Compare prices and learn more about several logistics providers.

The U.S. Postal Service’s logistics crackdown policy has been frequently upgraded

Previously, in response to the problem of fake postage, the U.S. Postal Service submitted a federal registration notice on changes to the U.S. Postal Service's mailing standards and domestic mail manual in February this year. The regulations allow the U.S. Postal Service to discard items that use fake postage after discovering them. The U.S. Postal Service has the right to dispose of such items at will without any responsibility . If this happens, consumers will have to seek recourse from the supplier.

Many consumers have great doubts about the U.S. Postal Service's arbitrary right to identify counterfeit postage, worrying that normal mailing items may be accidentally damaged. The U.S. Postal Service explained that in order to limit the incorrect identification of counterfeit postage, the postal service will only allow relevant determinations to be made by trained and authorized individuals or approved machine systems that are uniformly programmed to identify counterfeit postage.

In addition, the USPS is also considering other ways to deal with fake postage:

  • Improve various postage payment methods
  • Retired philatelists to monitor ads selling fake stamps
  • Create a list of fake mail suppliers

On May 11, the United States Postal Service and the United States Postal Inspection Service announced expanded operations to further protect the security of the nation’s mail and packages. The two agencies’ actions to combat counterfeit postage are as follows:

  1. The Postal Service intercepts packages with counterfeit labels;
  2. review shipments during outreach visits to Postal Service terminals and warehouses;
  3. Shut down websites and e-commerce accounts that sell counterfeit postage ;
  4. in partnership with Customs and Border Protection (CBP);
  5. A rewards program to promote inspection services that provides rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons who illegally use, reuse, or counterfeit postage stamps, postage stamps, license imprints, or other postage.

Not only is the use of false postage a growing problem, but change of address fraud is also on the rise. The Postal Service processed more than 33 million change of address (COA) transactions in fiscal year 2022. The Postal Service is strengthening its verification processes for all COA methods:

  • In April, the Postal Service implemented a two-factor authentication authentication service for online change-of-address transactions.
  • Beginning May 31, the Postal Service will offer enhanced in-person change of address transactions at post offices and retail stores.
  • Postal Service customers seeking a COA will now receive a verification letter at their old address and an activation letter at their new address.
  • The Postal Service will no longer accept change of address requests submitted by third parties .

Today, the United States is gradually increasing its scrutiny of logistics , which will become more and more complete. For unscrupulous logistics companies, there will be fewer and fewer loopholes to exploit.

Here again, we would like to remind all sellers not to be tempted by temporary discounts. It is very important to carefully choose logistics providers. Fishing in troubled waters during logistics inspections will not lead to "seeking wealth and honor in danger". More often than not, you will lose both money and goods, which is not worth the loss.
